A visceral expression of my experience with epilepsy
This book aims to provide a visual, visceral and expressive representation of my experience with epilepsy. I have often struggled with articulating the sensory experience of the condition, as the sensations are so complex and unique. From my research as a young person with epilepsy in Ireland I found little or no visual material to relate to. This contributed to feelings of isolation around the condition. The outcome of the project is a mixed-media book depicting a visual representation of my seizure experiences. Three of my seizure ‘experiences’ Myoclonic, Tonic Clonic and Focal, divide the book and are clearly signposted as you navigate your way through the intimate landscape of my lived experience with epilepsy.
The goal for the project was to use design communications and the book format (which is both an intimate and public format) to create an experience of my introspective feelings and sensations with epilepsy. A goal of the book is to connect with others with epilepsy and to aid a general understanding of the lived condition.
